Meet Some Amazing Animal Mothers

Plantasia is home to over 50 incredible species, and the animal world is full of fascinating mothers too.

Critically Endangered Egyptian tortoise mothers are small in size but represent a massive hope for their species’ survival. These resilient females, some of whom were rescued from the illegal pet trade, are vital participants in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), which works to prevent the extinction of the world’s second-smallest tortoise.

Motherhood for these tortoises is a painstaking process; they have a very low reproductive rate, and their keepers carefully map and protect every egg they lay to ensure the best chance of survival. Every single hatching is a conservation milestone, as the species is already thought to be extinct in its namesake country.

Plantasia has seen incredible success in recent years, welcoming six babies in 2022 alone and reaching a total of nine adorable hatchlings since the adults arrived. These tiny miracles, often no larger than a £1 coin at birth, are a testament to the dedication of their mothers and the teams protecting them.

It’s a wonderful reminder that motherhood exists everywhere in the natural world.
